Jackson took a leave of absence from the Supreme Court to serve as the Chief Counsel for the allied powers prosecution team at the Nuremberg war-crimes trials. He also served as both Attorney and Solicitor General of the United States under Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration. He was the last serving Supreme Court Justice who did not have a law degree. Chief Justice William Rehnquist served as Jackson's law clerk in the early 1950's. He was also a relative of Tommy Leach, the famed outfielder for the Pittsburg Pirates.
