ATALISSA, Iowa - Fred E. Barnhill, 83, Atalissa, died suddenly Monday, May 1, 2006, at his home.

Graveside services and burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa.

A memorial fund has been established.

Mr. Barnhill was born April 13, 1923, in Oskaloosa, the son of Fred E. and Wilhelmina M. McMains Barnhill. He married N. Jean Prine on Dec. 17, 1944. They divorced and he was later married to Lucille Wedekind. She preceded him in death in 2005.

He graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1942 and attended William Penn College.

In 1944, he worked on the Alaskan Highway and worked in retail sales for many years prior to purchasing Miller's Department Store, West Liberty, in 1960 which he had operated until the early '80s.

He was a member of Golden Rule Masonic Lodge No. 24 in Rochester and the Order of Eastern Star and held numerous offices in each. He had served as the West Liberty Chamber of Commerce president.

Survivors include a son, Larry Barnhill and wife Susan of North Liberty; two daughters, Joan Barnhill of Des Moines and Bonnie James and husband Brian of North Liberty; three grandchildren, Forrest Barnhill, Tyler James and Jaclyn James; and a brother, Robert W. Barnhill of Oskaloosa.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty; and his wife, Lucille.
