BREWSTER - Jack Edward Henderson, 94, died peacefully on Friday, April 27, 2007, at his home in Brewster. He had lived there for 22 years after his retirement in 1976 from the company he had been with for 32 years. He is the husband of Dorothy (Miller) Henderson of Brewster, formerly of Wakefield.

He was born in Navarre, Ohio, on Feb. 12, 1913, to Harry and Lelia Henderson. He lived in Lakewood, Ohio, where he attended grade school and graduated from Lakewood High in 1927. He began his athletic days on the basketball team there. He followed his brother Dean to Syracuse University, where he became active in student activities. He was student manager of the varsity basketball team, president of the Men's Student Senate and various honor societies on campus. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, Delta Phi Sigma Honorary Finance Fraternity and active in various other student affairs.

After graduation in 1937, he went to work with the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway in the general traffic department. In 1939, he was traffic representative at the M.A. Hanna Co. in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1947, he joined Consolidation Energy Co. as assistant traffic manager; in 1952, he transferred to the general office of Consol Energy Co. in Pittsburgh, Pa., as traffic manager; in 1968, he was made vice president; then retired in 1976, after 32 years of service. He was an honorary life member of the National Industrial Transportation League. In Pittsburgh, he was a member of the Duquesne Club; Pittsburgh Athletic Association, where he served on the board; and the Pittsburgh Traffic Club where he served two terms, the only man to serve more than one term. He retired to Cape Cod in 1985 and was a great sports fan.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Jack E. Jr. of Brewster; grandchildren, Peter and Stacy; two great-granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews. He was also father of the late James O. Henderson.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 1, at 1 p.m. in Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield.
