U.S. Supreme Court Justice. He was admitted to the bar in 1841 and was an associate of his brother's prominent New York City law firm until 1848. In 1849, he left for the Gold Rush in California, developed a legal practice, helped organize the town of Marysville and became the city's first mayor and judge. He was elected to the State Legislature in 1850, elected to the California Supreme Court in 1857 and served as Chief Justice, 1859 to 1863. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln appointed Field to the U.S. Supreme Court as an Associate Justice on the newly created tenth Supreme Court seat. He retired from the Supreme Court in 1897, after serving thirty-four years and six months, making him the second longest serving justice in the history of the Court. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
