Edward was the son of Nicholas and Kate Whalen. Some time in the mid 1920's he met Leslie Franck who had moved to New York to pursue a modeling career. About 1927 they were married; they never had any children. By 1930 he and Leslie moved to Fort Thomas, Kentucky, where they would live the remainder of their lives. Early in his adult life Edward was a mechanic and a machinist. Later on he was a subcontractor in reinforced steel. Edward died at the age of 79.
