History of the Red Star Cemetery

Around the year 1900 Mayberry and Arbella Jackson Britt donated one acre of land to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for the construction of a church and for use as a cemetery.

This acre of land was located in the Northeast corner of the original Britt 80 acre homestead. This acre served as the site for not only the cemetery but for the first three churches of the small congregation.Around the year of 1956 or 1958 there was an additional 1 acres of land donated by Nathan Britt, the son of Mayberry Britt that was from the original homestead tract of his father and mother.

Horace Britt, another son of Mayberry donated an additional 1-acre to the east of the site providing room for parking and expanding the cemetery.

The first burials in the cemetery occurred in 1915 and 1916, a grandson and granddaughter of Mayberry and Arbella Britt. This cemetery is one of the few cemeteries maintained by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints because of its historical significance. The first congregation of LDS members in this area came from the Joseph Reed and Mayberry Britt family in the late 1800's.Mayberry, his wife Arbella, and all ten of their children and eight of the children spouses are buried in the
cemetery.
