CIVIL WAR ARMY NURSE CORPS

She was one of the four Berks County nurses who served at Penn's Commons Hospital during the Civil War
Over 300 wounded soldiers were brought to the hospital after the battle of Antietam, and over 500 men had to be looked after at one time. The soldiers received the very best of attention for everyone sympathized with them, and were very anxious to make them as comfortable as possible. When the soldiers arrived from Antietam the nurses were on duty 48 hours on a stretch and almost broke down, but some of the men were in such bad condition that they needed instant attention. Very few deaths occurred. Those who did die were too far gone when they arrived. Every day 5 or 6 wagon loads of provisions and fruit were brought to the hospital by country people, some which was brought from places 10 miles distant

In 1926 she received an increase in government pension from 30 to 50 dollars per month for her civil war service. Only 48 women received this increase.
