Joseph was the son of John Porter & Elizabeth Hosack.

He married: (1) Eliza Patten Moore, who died in 1840; and (2) Hannah. Hannah's maiden name is unknown; she was previously married.

Joseph & Eliza's children included: Samuel M.; Ann Elizabeth (Thompson); David; John; Thomas; Sarah; Joseph E.; & Jonas.

Samuel & Hannah are two of the eight members of the Porter family whose names are on the Porter Monument. This monument apparently replaces their original individual tombstones.

Joseph & Hannah were living in Brown Co., OH at the time of the 1850 census. They moved to LaSalle Co., IL and were enumerated there at the time of the 1860 and 1870 censuses, and the widowed Joseph was enumerated there in 1880. By the time the 1885 Nebraska state census was taken, Joseph was living with family in Dorchester, Saline Co., KS. According to Find A Grave contributor GerryLynn, that is where he died.
