Wilbur served as a Electrician's Mate, First Class, USS Scorpion (SS-278), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

Wilbur was declared "Missing In Action" when the Scorpion was assumed to have hit a Japanese mine in the Yellow Sea. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
