Robert served as a Yeoman Third Class, U.S.S. Hull (DD-350), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Natrona County, Wyoming prior to the war.

The U.S.S. Hull, along with the U.S.S. Spence (DD-512) and the U.S.S. Monaghan (DD-354) sank during Typhoon Cobra off the East Coast of the Philippines during the war.

Robert was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking.
