Harry served as a Commander of the U.S.S. Meredith (DD-434), U.S. Navy during World War II. He has also previously served on the U.S.S Holland (AS-3), U.S.S. Twiggs (DD-127) and the U.S.S. Roper (DD-147).
He resided in Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, Maryland prior to the war.
He was declared "Missing In Action" when the Meredith was attacked by a force of 38 bombers, torpedo planes, and escort fighters from Zuikaku during the war. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
The U.S.S. Harry E. Hubbard (DD-748) was named in his honor and was launched on March 24, 1944 and commissioned on July 22, 1944 do also serve during World War II, the Korean War and in Vietnam.
