John's mother (my grandma's sister) passed away when he was still a toddler. My grandparents, Frank Dippel, and Anna Dippel adopted John and raised him for 8 years. Upon my grandpa's recommendation, and possibly to follow in my grandpa's footsteps, John joined the Navy. John served as a Water Tender 2nd Class (WT2C) aboard the USS Houston.
John died on 1 March 1942 when the USS Houston was sunk during WWII in the Sunda Strait in Indonesia. WT2 John J. Hogue is remembered at the Manila American Cemetery, Philippines, in the Tablets of the Missing memorial.
