He resided in Baltimore, Maryland prior to the war.
The Ross, while off Dinagat Island working with mine sweeping operations, struck two mines. The first one was hit at about 1:33 a.m. The second one was hit shortly after at 1:55 a.m. Three crew members were killed, 20 were missing, and nine were injured.
James was one of the three that was "Killed In Action" in these explosions during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
He was buried at sea.

Historical Note: The U.S.S. Ross is the only ship in U.S. Naval History to survive two underwater mine explosions. The Ross survived these explosions and the war and earned five battle stars during World War II.
