Martin served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on B-24J #42-110137, 23rd Bomber Squadron, 5th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Du Page County, Illinois prior to the war.

B-24J #42-110137 took off from Clark Field, Philippines on a bombing mission over the Alicante Airdrome, Negros Islands. After a successful bombing mission they were attacked by Japanese Zeros. Their #1 engine was hit and caught on fire and they crash into the sea during the war. 3 parachutes were seen coming from this B-24.

Martin was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded an Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
