Son of Mrs. Hilda C. Mackosky who resided in Ashley, Pennsylvania.

William served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-24J #42-100180, 408th Bomber Squadron, 22nd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 5, 1942 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

B-24J #42-100180 took off from Nadzab, Papua New Guinea on a strike mission over Peleliu Island. Over the target they were hit multiple times by ground anti-aircraft fire including one of their fuel tanks. They were unable to return to Nadzab due to running out of fuel and had to ditch in the sea. Four crew members survived the ditching. ( see below ).

William was "Killed In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
