Robert served as a Technical Sergeant & Engineer / Gunner on B-24J #42-73466, 424th Bomber Squadron, 307th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in St. Joseph County, Indiana prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on February 19, 1942 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a meatcutter and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24J #42-73466 took off, with other B-24's and with a crew of 10, on a bombing mission over Eten Island. They were attacked by enemy aircraft and shot down crashing in the sea off Eten.

Robert was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal, and the Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster.
