GOLD STAR LIST
Richard F. Stanley, first lieutenant, died in a plane crash between Townsville, Australia, and Finschhafen, New Guinea, March 27, 1945. He was awarded the Air Medal for his participation in offensives over the Dutch East Indies and the Philippines. Richard went into the Air Corps in July, 1942. He trained at Santa Ana, and Phoenix, Arizona.
Richard, a native of California, was raised by his mother Medora "Dora" (Hicks) and his stepfather, John G. Motley. He graduated from Hanford High School and attended Fresno State College. Before enlisting in the United States Army Air Forces, he was employed by the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company.
Richard was married to the former Dorothy Hutchison, the daughter of Alpha E. and Sarah "Sadie" (Kerr) Hutchison of Corcoran, California. Dorothy graduated from Corcoran High School and attended Fresno State College, where she was majoring in speech and dramatics. Her engagement was revealed to her sorority sisters at the end of a meeting of the Delta Sigma Epsilon. A box of candy covered with red, white and blue stripes with a flier's silver wings pinned on the cover was passed around. An enclosed card told the story. When Dorothy was asked where she met her fiance, she replied, "half way." Dorothy called Corcoran as well as Fresno home and the air forces pilot claimed Hanford as home. The couple met at a dance at Guernsey half way between the two places.
Richard and Dorothy had one daughter, Donna Frances, born April 9, 1945 in Tulare County.
Note - Dorothy was remarried in 1947 to Bill Luckhardt. She passed away July 5, 2005.
