Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, James was not officially declared by the military as being dead until November 16, 1943, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

James served as a Fireman First Class, U.S.S. Walke (DD-416), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York prior to the war.

He had also previously served on the U.S.S. Rathburne (DD-113).

James was declared "Missing In Action" when the Walke was hit by a Japanese torpedo strike near Guadalcanal and sank during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
