Buddy was the second child of Roy and Audnie Applewhite Wardlaw. During WWII, he joined the Coast Guard. He was stationed aboard the USS Callaway (APA-35), an attack transport, which carried men into battle. During preparations for the assault on Lingayen Gulf in January, 1945, the Callaway came under kamikaze attack. Buddy was killed along with 28 other men, and was buried at sea.
