He was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie Layne of Milano and had been with the navy about three years. The Cameron Herald, March 19, 1942 . . . Seaman 1/c Guthrie F. Layne, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.F. Layne, Milano, graduate of Milano High School. Entered Navy in 1940, trained in San Diego, Cal. Served in Philippines, Battle of Macassar Strait and Java Sea Battle. Killed in 1942 in JAVA (sic) Sea on USS Houston. Men and Women in the Armed Forces from Milam County, Texas . . . The war-time scrapbook of Seaman First Class Guthrie F. Layne, Jr., U.S.N., compiled aboard the USS Houston (CA-30) from November 2, 1940 through October 2, 1941, was graciously donated to Texas A&M University by his family.
