Born Franz Grundmann in Dortmund, Westphalia, Germany, he was the son of Franz Grundmann and Rose Spriegman. He served in the Franco-Prussian war, and came to Upstate NY shortly thereafter, becoming a US citizen in 1878, and Americanizing his name to Frank Grundman. Frank married Theresa Dick, another Westphalian immigrant, in Holy Trinity Church on April 5, 1883. They had three children - Henry, Frederick, and Marie.
