Gwilym Jones' information for this site was literally stumbled across while tracing two other members of H.M.S. Hood - Johnny Payne and Charlie Taylor. I knew that the Jones' name - obviously one of the most difficult to trace as it numbers in the millions and millions of ancestors - linked to Payne/Taylor/Poynter somewhere, and I also knew that the Jones' were also from Wales...I have heard that some of my family were working the Ceredigion mines over 100 years ago. However, I did not know when they (the Jones) began coming over to the U.S. - and I still really don't know; I did find a solid link, however in Kentucky/Missouri, and traced backward from there through that specific family. Imagine my surprise when Will Jones turned out to be on the same ship that fateful day as two of his distant cousins.
England did not have the Sullivan Law (immediate family members were not allowed to serve on the same ship, in the same regiment, etc. following the loss of the Sullivan Brothers in WWII), and in tracing the Hood, I have discovered and verified one set of brothers, an uncle and nephew, and beside my own family members, cousins to one another, and so Will is no more unusual than I found Johnny and Charlie to be, once I began verifying their connection.
With that in mind, there is not much available 'paper' information on Gwilym - we do know his birthdate and birthplace from the HMS file, and family history states that his mother's first or middle name was Agnes. There is a real probability that Will either left home at a very young age or was orphaned, as there was no 'follow up' on his loss at all - no letters to family, nothing.
The birth information is, at this point, all I do have to add to this page, and of course my own genealogical paper chase that takes him into the Poynter/Jones of Kentucky/Missouri, but I will continue to search, and update this page accordingly.
Note: Able Seaman, Royal Navy; Ancestors very possibly mostly in America, at this point
