Virginia Governor. He served as the 60th and the 62nd Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Governors are elected to one term of four years, which cannot be renewed. After a short career with the FBI, he entered politics, serving in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1948 to 1952; the State Senate from 1952 to 1962; as lieutenant governor from 1962 to 1966; and as governor of Virginia from 1966 to 1970 as a Democrat and from 1974 to 1978 as a Republican. He was the only person elected twice by the people as Virginia's governor, and the only person elected as governor of any state from both of our major political parties. He did not believe in the death penalty. He was called as " Virginia's Education Governor" by Virginia Education Association. He was educated at Old Dominion University before the University of Virginia, receiving an LL.B degree. He married once, and the couple adopted a daughter, who was killed in a lightning accident. He died of pneumonia. Two schools were named in his honor. The last one was named in 2016 and with controversy as he did not support integration of schools in the 1960s.
