Kirkland, IL-P.F.C., Melvin Lewis "Bud" Haile, 22 year old Kirkland infantryman, captured Dec. 12 in Luxembourg died in a prison camp near Badorf, Germany, according to a telegram recieved yesterday from the war department by his widow, Mrs. Lola Haile of Kirkland.
The message did not reveal the date and cause of his death.
Mr. Haile was notified of the young soldier's death shortly after recieving several letters, signed by her husband, in which her reported he was alive and well.
Attached to the 28th infantry division of the first Army, he was a was a veteran of 18 months foriegn service. His status as a prisoner was disclosed in a message written Jan. 11 and subsequently, a letter was recieved from him on Feb 2.
Private Haile was born August 22, 1922 in Kirkland, and was married to the former Lola Savely, Jan 31, 1942 in Kokomo, Mo. He entered the service Aug 28, 1942 and had seen service in England, France, Luxembourg and Germany.
Besides his widow, and a 2 year old daughter, Diana Lee, living in Kirkland, he is survived by his father, Gus Haile, Rockford. Five brothers, George, in Italy, Edward, Gerald, Earl and James; five sisters, Mrs. Virginia Ferguson, Rosemary, Joanne, Linda and Judith Haile, all of Rockford.
