John served as a Captain & Observer on B-17G #43-38359, 861st Bomber Squadron, 493rd Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Jefferson County, Ohio prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 16, 1941 at Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17G #43-38359 was hit by flak and burst into flames over their target, an oil refinery in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Five of the crewmen were able to parachute out.

John was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

John was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
