Robert S. Mapes was the son of Morillo Henry Mapes and Ada Belle Karr . The family moved from Illinois to Arkansas in 1916 and later spent awhile in Texas. Robert attended school in Lamesa, Texas and in the Mena, Arkansas public school system. He became a barber and worked int eh trade at Mena and in Elaine, Arkansas.

Robert entered the United States Army on 4/2/1942 and was sent to Camp Barkeley, Texas for basic training. He became a mortarman in the 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry "Tough Hombres" Division and was sent to England in March, 1944 to begin preparing for the invasion of Europe. Robert landed at Normandy on 6/8/1944, on D-Day + 2. His unit was under the command of Third Army and fought continuously throughout the Normandy campaign and at Cherbourg. robert was killed in action at St. Lo on 7/3/1944.

Private First Class Robert S. Mapes, Sn #37108155, earned the following badges/decorations for his service during World War II:
