Private William Lee Burk, born 19 Feb 1925, was the son of Thomas R. "Robert" Burk and Betty M. "Mahalia" (Parrott) Burke of rural Antlers, Pushmataha County, Oklahoma. Antlers is in southeastern Oklahoma 55 miles south of McAlester.

In the 1930 census 5-year-old William is living with his parents and sister Betty 1, in Antlers Township, Pushmataha County, Oklahoma. His father is a laborer for a lumber mill. 21-year-old Marvin B. Pool is listed as a boarder in the household.

In the 1940 census 15-year-old William is living with his parents and siblings Betty 11, Robert Jr., 9, and Kenneth 5, in Finley Township od Pushmataha County. His father is a foreman on a road construction crew. Former boarder Marvin B. Pool is listed with his own household in Finley in the 1940 census and also works on a road construction crew.

William registered for the draft on 30 Jan 1943 at Finley, Pushmataha County. He was 5'9" and weighed 140 lbs with blue eyes and brown hair. He was employed by Clark & Stockton company. His next of kin was listed as Barto Pool so he must have been related somehow to the former boarder in the 1930 census.

Pvt Burk was assigned to Company B in 1st Battalion, of the 116th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division.

The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county show Burk, William L, 38589331, Pvt from Pushmataha County, Oklahoma as killed in action 29 Jun 1944. On 29 Jun 1944 the 1st Battalion of the 116 Infantry Regiment was repelling German counter attacks in a line 800 yards north of St. Andre De L'Epine four miles east northeast of Saint Lo so we can assume Pvt Burk was killed there.

The Daily Oklahoman (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) – 19 Sep 1944, Tue – Page 4 – 24 Oklahoma Soldiers Are Listed Killed – The army Monday reported 21 Oklahomans as killed and three more were reported by next of kin, boosting the state's killed in action list by 24 names. The 24 men were killed in three different battle areas. Killed in European Area: Pvt. William R. Burk, son of Thomas R. Burk of Snow, Pushmataha county.
