Ralph served as a Technical Sergeant with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Carroll County, Maryland prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Maryland National Guard on February 3, 1941, prior to the war, in Westminster, Maryland. He was noted as being employed as a painter and also as Single, without dependents.

He was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart!

T/Sgt. Ralph H. Barnes Is Killed In Action

Word was received from the War Department that T/Sgt Ralph Holmes Barnes, husband of Mrs. Katherine Lea Massicot Barnes, Westminster, was killed in action in France on July 13. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph G. Barnes, also of Westminster, and had observed this twenty-fourth birthday on May 20. He was the father of a son, James Lee Barnes, aged 16 months.

T/Sgt Barnes joined Company H of the Maryland Natiional Guard on July 21, 1940 and was with the company when it entered service in February, 1941. In May, 1943, he was transferred to the 119th Infantry, 30th Division, and was serving with this unit in France. He was last home on furlough in November 1943, and left for overseas this past January. The soldier is also survived by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob T. Holmes, Westminster, and by his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Barnes, New Windsor.

Note Ralph is also memorialized on his parents gravestone in Westminster Cemetery, Md. and on his wife's gravestone in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Littletown, Pa.
