Private Edward T. Vibbert, infantry, Benson, Ill., "for extraordinary heroism in action near Sergy, northeast of Chateau Thierry, France, July 31, 1918. Bearing a message, this soldier was mortally wounded. Lying on the ground, he yelled. "A message," attracted the attention of the platoon leader, and with his dying breath delivered the message he bore." Chicago Tribune, 27 Sep 1918 (awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for acts of gallantry in action)
