END COMES SUDDENLY TO PROMINENT WOMAN
Wife of Retired Mail Carrier Expires Shortly After Amputation of Toe, Came Here in 1855
Death came suddenly at 8:43 o'clock this morning at McCune-Brooks Hospital to Mrs. Samuel Zane, prominent Carthage woman.
Mrs. Zane had been in ill helth since last March and had been a patient at various times recently in the hospital. Death came soon after a toe had been amputated as a result of gangrene due to arterial sclerosis.
Born September 20, 1874 in McDonald, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Zane came to Carthage in 1885 with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin J. Gladden, and made this her home since. Her father was an implement dealer here many years.
Mary Belle Gladden was married May 29, 1907, in Carthage to Samuel Zane, the family home is at 122 Cooper Street.
Mr. Zane was with the postal service here for many years. He retired some time ago.
Mrs. Zane was a member of the Presbyterian church, Rhoda Fairchild chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Alpha Society.
Surviving her are the husband and two sisters;
Miss Alice Gladden of Carthage and
Mrs. Joe Gladden of Coral Gables, Florida
J. S. Campbell of 302 W. Chestnut St. is an uncle of Mrs. Zane.
The sister, Miss Alice Gladden has been making her home with the Zanes the last few years, coming here from Salem, Ohio where she was librarian in the city library a nunmber of years. She was librarian at the Carthage library before going to Salem.
