Edward Thomas McGettigan, Sr., of Norwalk, father of Susan Carroll and Joan McGettigan, both of New Canaan, died Wednesday, September 6, at his home. He was 81 years old.

He was born April 21, 1925, in the Bronx, N.Y., son of the late Charles and Mary McGettigan, and after attending Fordham Prep graduated from Villanova University in Pennsylvania.

He also was a decorated veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. McGettigan was a founding partner, president and chief executive officer of the American Transit Insurance Company in Manhattan, a firm that insured most of New York City's taxis.

Known for his philanthropies in his community and church, Mr. McGettigan also coached in the boys' baseball leagues in Larchmont, N.Y., and frequently spoke to school groups about his war experiences.

A man of diverse interests, he also owned standardbred and thoroughbred horses and he loved poetry.

Surviving, in addition to his daughters here, are his wife of 56 years, Lorraine McGettigan; two sons, James McGettigan of Bloomsburg, Pa., and Edward McGettigan, Jr., of Norwalk; a brother, John McGettigan of California, and five grandchildren, Molly Carroll, Fisher McGettigan, James Edward McGettigan, Avery McGettigan and Brady McGettigan.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday morning at St. Matthew R.C. Church, 216 Scribner Avenue, Norwalk. Arrangements were made through the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien.
