Born on the 1st April 1906 in Barnsley South Yorkshire, Richard was the son of Francis William Burbury and Ethel Frances Burbury (nee Grover). He had a twin sister called Patience and three older brothers. Richard was educated first at Ludgrove School and then Eton College before going on to join the army.

He married Daphne MacNaghten in March 1940 .

On the 6th June 1944 he and another officer left the landing craft on Sword Beach. They were running up the beach when Richard was killed by a sniper. The other officer with him survived. That man was the father of Lord Ashcroft. Lord Ashcroft went on to create & fund the Ashcroft Gallery of Gallantry Medals in the Imperial War Museum. Richard is commemorated on the East Bergholt War Memorial in Suffolk and on the memorial in Eton College.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission have agreed that the date of death is wrong and stated that they will be amending the headstone in due course.
