Meadville, April, 10-The first Crawford county soldier to die on the western front in the struggle to make the world safe for democracy is Curran Joseph Chapin, son of Mrs. Margaret Chapin of this city.

Information that he had been killed in action on the west front came to the mother in the form of an official telegram from Ottawa today announcing the boy's death on March 24.

The telegram merely announced that he had been killed on the western front, giving no details.

Chapin was a member of the 8th machine gun company, British expeditionary forces, Canadian contingent.

On March 10, he wrote a letter to his mother which had been received by her and in which he said that he was well and getting along splendidly.

The young man was 22 years old. A brother, George Chapin, is a member of Co. B, 112th United States infantry, Camp Hancock, Augusta, Ga. He too, it is expected, will soon be on the battle front in France as the departure of the regiment is expected some time in the near future.
