Charles was "Killed In Action" when the F-3A he was on was shot down by enemy flak and crashed in France during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Charles was one of three crew members of a F-3A Photo Reconnaissance Aircraft nicknamed 'Sleepy Time Gal'. They took off from Airfield 39 at Chateaudun, France on a mission south of the Loire River and were shot down by flak. 4 KIA. (Source: MACR 9099)
