He resided in San Francisco County, California prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 13, 1941, prior to the war, at the Presidio of Monterey, California. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

William was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-24, while on a bombing mission over Germany, exploded in mid-air and crashed during the war. The cause noted by the Air Force was that either they were hit by German ground anti-aircraft fire or possibly by a bomb being released from a bomber above.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster.
