Kahn was born in the German city of Frankfurt am Main in 1923 as the son of Arthur and Bella Kahn. He had one sister, Helen Kahn. A short while before Germany invaded Poland in September 1939 the family fled to the United States of America.
In 1943 Robert L. Kahn enlisted in the United States Army and after training he served as a Private First Class with HQ Company, 2nd Battalion of the 60th Infantry Regiment in Europe during the Second World War.
Robert L. Kahn was listed as Missing in Action on the 6th of September 1944 and he was officially declared dead one year and one day later, on the 7th of September 1945.
Private First Class Kahn was awarded with the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge.
