Nicholas served as a First Lieutenant & Bombardier on B-24G #42-78256, 746th Bomber Squadron, 456th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Louisiana prior to the war.

B-24G #42-78256 took off from Stornara, Italy on a bombing mission over Blechhammer, Germany. After a successful bomb run they were hit by German ground anti-aircraft fire on the left wing causing them to crash in Germany during the war. One airmen from another plane said he saw 9 parachutes leave the aircraft.

Nicholas was "Killed In Action" in Germany during the war.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Purple Heart.
