Rev. Bishop James Mills Thoburn was the son of Matthew Martin and Jane Lyle Crawford Thoburn. He was the brother of Isabella Thoburn. Sarah Minerva (Rockwell) Downey Thoburn was his 1st wife. They were married December 16, 1861 and she died October 30, 1862. Anna Theresa (Jones) Thoburn was his 2nd wife. They were married November 11, 1880 and she died September 16, 1902. He was a minister in the Erie Conference, Bengal Conference, Minnesota Conference, Detroit Conference and Pittsburgh Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
He was the eldest of nine children born to Irish immigrant parents who had settled in Ohio. He set off for Allegheny College at the age of 15 with $162.50 and his mother's advice to "spend it carefully". After a year, he found himself without enough money to continue his studies and for a period taught in the public schools. He graduated from Allegheny College in 1857. In July 1859 he sailed to India and began a remarkable career of service to the Methodist Episcopal Church in Southeast Asia. Elected Missionary Bishop of India and Malaysia in 1888, he founded the Calcutta Boys School, which flourishes today.
