Daughter of George McNeely and his wife, Jane Regester. Sarah was a member of the Quakers at the time of her marriage to Townsend Richards on 1 June 1820, but was "dismissed" for her marriage "contrary to unity" on 24 August 1820. Sarah was the mother of as many as 8 children born in Columbiana County, Ohio, prior to the family's move to Wayne County, Illinois. An additional son was born after the family arrived in Wayne county.
The exact date of Sarah's death is unknown. She made her "X" on mortgage documents in 1843. Townsend remarried after Sarah's death, with son John Townsend Richards born on 7 October 1846. Therefore, Sarah's death could not have been any later than 1845. Place of burial has not been confirmed, but is presumed to have been in the church yard next to several of her children. That includes a son, Eli, who was included in the 1830 and 1840 census, but who died prior to the 1850 census. As Townsend remarried, and was one of the founding members of the Pleasant Grove church in 1854, he was buried at that location. Son William remained a member of the Buckeye church until his death.
