John served as a Private First Class in the 504th Parachute Infantry Regt, 82nd Airborne Division, U.S. Army during World War II.


He resided in Onondaga County, New York prior to the war.


He enlisted in the Army on April 14, 1942 in Syracuse, New York. He was noted as being employed in the manufacture of automobiles and also as Single, without dependents.


He was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Pfc. DiRienzo, Paratrooper, Dies in Battle


Syracusan Killed in Action in North Africa-Sicily Area


Pfc. John DiRienzo, one of the first paratroopers to land in Sicily, was killed in action on Sept. 17 in the North Africa-Sicily area, the War Department has notified his father, Bernard C. DiRienzo, of 335 Park Street. Besides his father, he leaves his wife, who before their marriage last February was Miss Rose Eppelitto; a sister, Anne, of Syracuse, and a brother, Pfc. Joseph DiRienzo, in Service in California.

Pfc. DiRienzo joined the Army in April, 1942 and trained first at Fort Genning. Ga., and then at Fort Bragg, N.C. He volunteered for the paratroops and wrote friends here that he liked that service. He was injured and was hospitalized in North Africa, but later returned to duty.

He was born Sept. 24, 1920, in Syracuse and was graduated from Vocational High School in 1939. He played on the Vocational High School baseball team.

He was known also as an amateur boxer and boxed under the name of "Joe Butch." He engaged in many amateur boxing bouts.

Before entering the Army he was employed by the Halcomb [Crucible] Steel Company.
