William served as a Technical Sergeant & Engineer/Top Turret Gunner on B-17F (#42-5129), 368th Bomber Squadron, 306th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Vermilion County, Illinois prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on August 21, 1941, prior to the war, in Peoria, Illinois. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, without dependents.

William was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was shot down by German aircraft and crashed in the North Sea during the war. The entire 9 man crew was killed in this crash. He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
