Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, Dean was not officially declared by the military as being dead until February 11, 1945, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

Dean served as a Staff Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-17G #42-31566, 339th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Chenango County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on January 25, 1943 in Binghamton, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Dairy Farm Hand and also as Single, without dependents.

Dean was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was hit by German Flak and crashed into the North Sea during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
