Cleve served as a Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-17G #42-31441, 360th Bomber Squadron, 303rd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Aroostook County, Maine prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 22, 1942 in Bangor, Maine. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in a machine shop and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17G #42-31441 had just taken off from Molesworth/Sta. 107 in England and was assembling into flight formation when they were involved in a mid-air collision with B-17 #42-29747 and crashed at Catworth, Cambridgeshire, England. All twenty airmen aboard both planes were killed.

Cleve was "Killed In Action" in this incident during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
