Allen served as a Staff Sergeant & Top Turret Gunner on B-17F "Son" #42-5221, 427th Bomber Squadron, 303rd Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Allen was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 was hit by German aircraft and crashed into the Baltic Sea, near Lolland, Denmark during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
