In July 1941, after graduating from the Lawrence High School (Lawrence, MA) in June, he enlisted in the US Navy Naval Air Corp., trained in Newport, RI and Norfolk, VA Naval Stations and became a Aviation Machinists Mate, 2nd Class. He went on several overseas missions. In Sept 1943 he went on one to England as part of a squadron engaged in operations to combat enemy submarines. On the 10th, the squadron was on a aerial gunnery training flight and his plane, with a crew of 8, crashed and sank.

In August 1948, he was posthumously awarded 2 metals; the American Campaign Medal and the European - African - Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. Documentation accompanying them from the Naval Dept, refers to them as the American Defense Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
