Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until September 14, 1943, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

Lockwood served as a Boatswain's Mate Second Class, S.S. Mary Luckenbach, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in the District Of Columbia prior to the war.

Lockwood was declared "Missing In Action" when the Mary Luckenbach, while traveling with a convoy through the Barent's Sea, was attacked by several German aircraft, and was hit by an aerial torpedo which caused the ship to basically vaporize due to their cargo of 1,000 tons of TNT during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
