Husband of Shirley Ramona Fletcher. Father of Gary and Joyce Nellis. 1st Lt. William Harnell Nellis flew 70 WWII combat missions and was shot down 3 times, the last one fatally. On 30 April 1950, the Las Vegas Air Force Base in Nevada USA, was named in his honor.
William joined the Army Enlisted Reserve Corps on 2 Dec 1942 training in Albany, Georgia. He was comissioned a flight officer on 7 Jan 1944. On 9 Jul 1944 he was assigned to the 513th Fighter Squadron in support of General George Patton's Third Army. Flying a P-47 Thunderbolt during the Battle of he Bulge, he was shot down by ground fire while strafing a German convoy. During his 70th mission, Lt. Nellis' aircraft was hit by ground fire while strafing a German convoy near Bastogne, Belgium. He was too low to bail out. Nellis' remains were recovered from his wrecked aircraft the following April. 1st Lt. William Nellis was awarded 2 legions of merit and 2 Distinguished Flying Cross.
