WM. TOWNSEND DIES TODAY AT COUNTY HOSPITAL
Rites Sunday for Widely Known Local Man
William Townsend, 88, one of Berne's elderly and well known residents, passed away shortly before noon today at the Adams County Memorial hospital. Death was caused by complications associated with old age.
Several weeks ago Mr. Townsend was taken to the home of a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William Davis, at Lousville, Kentucky, where he became ill. About two weeks ago he was brought to the Adams county hospital and had been a patient there since then.
Mr. Townsend was a native of Blackford county and was born on July 14, 1877, the son of Elija and Rachel Farmer Townsend. He was married at Hartford city in 1898 to Miss Emma Gray. In 1909 they moved to Adams county and lived the rest of their lives here. Mrs. Townsend preceded him several years ago. They were engaged in farming until 1922, when he became employed at the Dunbar Furniture plant and retired from that work in 1956.
Survivors include two sons and two daughters, Ora and Robert Townsend, both of Berne, Mrs. Clarence (Edna) Luginbill of Ft. Wayne, and Mrs. William (Margaret) Davis of Louisville. A daughter, Nellie, preceded him in death. There are also 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Lester (Oma) Casterline and a brother, Adam, both of Hartford City. Three brothers preceded him. They were Charles, Fred, and Olie.
Mr. Townsend was a member of the Trinity Evangelical United Brethern church here where services will be held at 2:00 with Rev. Kenneth Overmeyer officiating. Interment will be in M.R.E. cemetery.
Friends may call at the Yager Funeral home after 7:00 o'clock on Saturday evening.
