Mary was the daughter of David and Margaret G.(Stewart) Gibson. She had 15 siblings.Mary spoke fluent Scottish Gaelic. In the 1800s this language was widely spoken in Scotland. Mary's family lived in poverty in Scotland. They're dream was to go to America to start a new and hopefully more prosperous life. In 1871 Jessie and her family left Arbroath for Liverpool,England. From England they boarded the ship "Aleppo" for Boston. They could only afford to travel in the cargo area of the ship . This meant being in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. Often the cargo area was infested with rats and lice. The meals consisted of soup made from fish bones and heads and stale bread. On April 17,1871 they arrived in Boston. David's son David S. had immigrated to America a few years earlier and the rest of the family joined him in Lawrence,Massachusetts. In Lawrence life was easier than it had been for David and his family in Scotland. However, they still lived in poverty. Despite the harsh and unfit working conditions, many children were expected to work in the factories. They had to in order to help put food on the table. During the time in which they worked at the mills there were child labor strikes which helped improve conditions. Some of Mary's siblings worked in the woolen mills and factories as children to help support their families. Jessie and her family lived in Lawrence,Massachusetts at 37 May Street for several years. Mary married was married to George F. Bristow(1851)who was from England. All of their children were born in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania. Mary and George are listed as having lived in Philadelphia in 1900. Mary died at the age of 90.
