In a letter from his company commander, the details of his death were given. He was fatally wounded by a sniper during the closing days of the African campaign. The medical officer was at hand but all aid was of no avail. According to Capt. Fanning, Lawrence did not suffer at all and apparently died a short time after he was shot.
Unfortunately his military records were included in those destroyed by a July 12, 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
He had one brother and six sisters. His parents immigrated from Norway and settled in North Dakota.
